“Let’s play design,” Ghislaine Vinas

A radical visionary, Ghislaine takes risks with her designs and has an instinct for dramatic composition inspired by revolutionary materials and mediums as well as continued explorations of eccentric colour play, brave artwork, and distinctive contrasts in scale. “The first time I encountered Abigail Edwards' work, I was immediately drawn to it because we have a shared appreciation for taking a light-hearted approach and don’t take things too seriously.”

From the age of 13, I was that individual who wholeheartedly embraced the vision of becoming an interior designer and steadfastly stayed the course,” says Ghislaine. Originally from the Netherlands and raised in South Africa, unusually, and bravely, Ghislaine set up her own studio never having worked for another designer previously. Launched in 1999 and based in New York City, this is where the brands creativity comes together, winning countless awards for international residential and commercial projects, as well as projects in hospitality, creative direction, and product design.

Ghislaine’s TriBeCa town house project is a perfect example of the childlike penchant for playfulness and spontaneity that the studio is celebrated for. With cheerfully bright, contrasting yet mesmerizingly sophisticated design stretching all over the house.

During ICFF in New York one year, a client was really drawn to Abigail’s work, and it always stayed with her. When embarking on the renovation of her TriBeCa townhouse, the client was unequivocal about her choice, selecting Abigail Edwards' designs for the captivating wallpaper that now adorns her living room,” says Ghislaine. Having selected Rapunzel Stripe Wallpaper, it was custom printed in a rich blue to compliment the paint work and furniture running throughout the living room and kitchen.

Before choosing a pattern, Ghislaine and her team reflect on the narrative they've crafted for the project. “We might opt for plaids to evoke a cosy country home ambiance, or incorporate florals. Our constant endeavour is to chart a new course and discover patterns that resonate with the client's unique interests and backgrounds. This approach not only allows us to continually explore but also ensures our interiors remain vibrant and fresh. Our client was the one who discovered the enchanting Rapunzel Stripe wallpaper, and given her penchant for braids, we instantly recognised the profound personal connection it could create. Infusing patterns, colours, or interiors with a client's individual touch is always so fulfilling for us.
